One of the most successful Czech startups in travel
Kiwi.com was founded in 2012, originally under the name SkyPicker.com. Its founder was Oliver Dlouhý and its first investor was Jiří Hlavenka. The company is changing the way we travel today and will travel in the future. Its core business is a search engine for cheap flights and, more recently, for connecting bus, train and taxi services as well. By combining airlines that do not cooperate with one another, it can offer travellers new routes and lower fares.
In its second year after being founded, the company sold flights worth CZK 5 million; in 2014 it was already CZK 140 million, in 2015 CZK 2 billion and in 2018 CZK 30.9 billion. The company has won a number of Czech business awards, and in 2017 and 2018 it was named the fastest-growing start-up in Central Europe. In June 2019, the American fund General Atlantic bought a majority stake in the Brno-based Kiwi.com. The company did not disclose the price of the transaction, but according to earlier unconfirmed reports General Atlantic was to pay almost CZK 3 billion for the stake.
„Operating without the cloud is really unthinkable today.“

The company was growing dynamically and hiring hundreds of employees a year. These employees were spread across several offices around the world. They needed secure e-mail, shared storage for company documents, and tools for communication and collaboration. Some of the e-mails they sent were ending up in recipients' spam folders. As the number of user accounts grew, so did the cost per user. The company was using a large amount of cloud computing power from Amazon Web Services.
We won the client in June 2016. The first thing we did was configure the mail system so that e-mails no longer ended up in spam. We also set it up so that it was no longer possible to send spoofed e-mails that appeared to come from the company's owner. We adjusted the G Suite licences so that some users had Basic licences and others Business licences. We connected the Kiwi.com IT team with Google's own Google Cloud experts.
Users' e-mail was no longer marked as spam and deliverability increased. The spoofed e-mails stopped. Adjusting the G Suite licences brought cost savings of approximately 30% in the very first year. Kiwi.com started using Google's cloud tools for its computing power and big data.
